Thomas Richard Giffune, 24, of Verona, ended his life on Friday, October 5, 2018, after a decade-long battle with Bipolar Disorder.
He was born on March 27, 1994, the son of Timothy and Valerie (Simpson) Giffune of Verona.  He graduated from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School in 2012 (Class President), and from SUNY Potsdam in 2016 (Summa Cum Laude) with a triple major in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; he was also awarded the SUNY Chancellors Award for Student Excellence.
He was employed by Indium Corporation in Clinton, NY, as a Research Technician.  Prior to Indium, he worked as a substitute teacher in the VVS District, with assignments ranging from kindergarten classes, to physics, to high school band.
In addition to his heartbroken parents, Tom is survived by his aunt, Emily (David) Arbes of Endicott, NY; his uncle Rick (Debbie) Giffune of New Hartford; cousins, Andrew (Chelsea Markus) Arbes of Manhattan, Alexander Arbes of Endicott, Jackie Giffune of New York City, Renee (James and Baby James) Ward of Chester Springs, PA, and Zack and James Goldstein; godparents, Jack (Linda) Angrisano of New Hartford and Giovanna (Sal) Baggetta of Herkimer; and special family friend DeDe Giffune of Chadwicks.  He was predeceased by grandparents, Richard and Marlene (Barr) Giffune, and Robert and Elizabeth (Dowdall) Simpson, and beloved cousin, Dickie Barr.
He was a man of eclectic tastes, ranging from Phantom of the Opera to Monty Python.  His rendition of “The Parrot Sketch” with Ben McEwen will live on as one of the most memorable performances in VVS history.  He was always available to offer his scientific knowledge, an understanding ear, or a bone-crushing bear hug.  His sense of humor, compassion, and intelligence will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank their incredible friends and family for their kindness and assistance during this difficult time.  Special heartfelt thanks go to Tony and Talysa Iannello and their family for their care, feeding, love and attention.  And of course, much love to Tom’s beloved “Band of Brothers”, whose second home was (and always will be) on Spring Road: Jordan Durant, Derek Gracey, Tom Howard, Lucas Kelly, Jonathan Swalgin, and Andrew Urtz.
There will be a memorial service on 4 PM, Saturday, October 13, at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc. 260 Main Street, Oneidawith the Reverend Michael Usborne, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home, 1-4 PM, Saturday.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the VVS Music Boosters or Drama Boosters, in care of VVS High School.

Tom, I am speechless. My heart hurts right now for the pain you must have lived with and for all of us that are missing you. I always worried about you and you would always tell me, I am good. Don't worry. You had an awesome sense of humor which will be missed by our entire R&D dept. at Indium. I know you will watch over all of us. Rest in peace my buddy. Love, Doreen

Tim & Val, Most days it was nothing more than a hello, but it was a pleasure to be able to see Tom every day at work. I did tell him I knew you guys on the first day he started at Indium. Later on he asked how I knew who he was and I told him that his parents talked about him all the time, he asked, "all good I hope?", I replied with, "of course, they're very proud of you!". Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers every day and please ask if you ever need anything. Rest in peace Tom. You will be missed.

Tom was a good man. I only met him a few times, and only briefly and in passing, but he was kind and considerate to someone who badly needed it. i don't know how he noticed other people's pain, but he did, and found ways to ease that pain. he was a friend to all: clever, funny, and above all, kind.
